New Initiatives

The spacious new Emergency Department at St. Francis Hospital is a perfect example of people giving to people. Grateful patients and community members who were inspired by their own experiences at St. Francis contributed more than $8 million to cover the cost of the project – making it the hospital’s first building project to be fully funded by private philanthropy.

Dedicated as The Yvette and Joel Mallah Emergency Department, this new facility is nearly double the size of the original space and includes design features that enhance the comfort and privacy of patients and visitors. It also is slated to be Long Island’s first “green” Emergency Department, having been constructed with environmentally-friendly materials and building practices.

In total, more than $70 million was raised through a capital campaign for the hospital’s recently completed Master Facilities Plan, which included the creation of the Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Pavilion and the renovation of the Heart Center.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the surroundings at St. Francis now highlight its consistently excellent care.

New opportunities to become involved in shaping the next generation of care at St. Francis Hospital include:

  • Creating a new Oncology Infusion Unit
  • Equipping a second hybrid operating room to be used for cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterization procedures
  • Expanding the Crew Resource Management training program, which was modeled after a safety initiative developed for flight crews and promotes safe, consistent and superior quality of care through respectful teamwork.
