St. Francis Hospital Names New Congestive Heart Failure Chief

Roslyn, NY - St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® is pleased to announce that Timothy J. Vittorio, M.S., M.D., has been appointed Director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics. Dr. Vittorio previously served as the Associate Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at its School of Medicine.

“Congestive heart failure is one of the leading causes of admission to our hospital,”says Jack Soterakis, M.D., SVP of Medical Affairs. “As a highly recognized expert in his field, Dr. Vittorio will help us enhance the quality of both our inpatient and outpatient care for these patients.”

Dr. Vittorio’s clinical areas of expertise are cardiomyopathy, mechanical assist devices, cardiac transplantation and high-risk heart failure surgery. In addition, he specializes in heart failure prevention, including obesity-related cardiac manifestations.

“St. Francis is a world class heart center and I look forward to joining its team of topnotch physicians,” says Dr. Vittorio. “My vision is to develop a strong program encompassing clinical patient care, education, and research to better serve the vast population of Long Island.”

Dr. Vittorio received his Doctor of Medicine from the Sackler School of Medicine/Tel- Aviv University. He completed a General Surgery Internship followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at the Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at Columbia University as well as a Cardiovascular Fellowship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center.

The Riverdale resident is a member of the Heart Failure Society of America and is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases. He has numerous publications, some of which have appeared in Circulation and the Journal of Cardiac Failure. Dr. Vittorio is currently involved in international, multicenter trials involving new drug therapies for acutely decompensated heart failure patients. He is also involved in some studies involving reversible cardiomyopathies using non-invasive modalities such as cardiac MRI.
