St. Francis Hospital Appoints Robert Alan Kates, M.D., New Chairman of Anesthesiology
Roslyn, New York – St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® has named Robert Alan Kates, M.D., its new Chairman of Anesthesiology. Dr. Kates served most recently as the Vice Chairman of the Department and has been an attending anesthesiologist at St. Francis since 1986. He is also the Coordinator of the Department’s Performance Improvement Program and a Representative to the Credentials Committee.
“Dr. Kates is one of the most respected physicians in his specialty in our region,” says Jack Soterakis, M.D., Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs. “He has been an extremely valuable member of the St. Francis medical team for 25 years. He is well known for his professionalism and his dedication to the Hospital’s mission of providing excellence in patient care.”

Before joining St. Francis, Dr. Kates was an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine, where he served as Coordinator of Cardiac Anesthesia Education, as well as the Coordinator of his division’s Fellowship and Transplant Programs. Prior to that, he was Co-Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Kates received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He belongs to numerous medical societies including the International Anesthesia Research Society, the American and New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. He is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Anesthesiology, a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
The Huntington, Long Island resident has also led major medical studies in the field of anesthesiology and authored numerous scholarly articles for leading medical publications, as well as contributed chapters to text books.
