U.S. News & World Report Rates St. Francis Top Hospital on Long Island in Its First-Ever Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings

Roslyn, New York, March 29, 2011 – St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® has been ranked the best hospital on Long Island and seventh among New York Metro area hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in the first regional edition of its Best Hospitals rankings. The Hospital was one of 66 medical centers in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and New Jersey to make the new list.

“It is gratifying to receive this outstanding regional recognition, which complements U.S. News & World Report’s national ranking of St. Francis as one of America’s best hospitals for the past four years,” says Alan D. Guerci, M.D., President and CEO. “It is a tribute to our staff and their remarkable dedication to excellence in patient care.”

U.S. News ranked hospitals within all 52 U.S. metro areas with populations of 1 million or more, using existing data from its 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings. To be ranked in its metro area, hospitals had to score in the top 25 percent in the nation in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

U.S. News uses a range of measures to derive its rankings: mortality rates and reputation among physicians as the best in their specialty for the most challenging cases each account for 32.5 percent of a hospital’s score. Measures related to quality of care, such as patient volume and nursing care, account for 30 percent. Patient safety accounted for 5 percent.

In addition to the three specialties for which the Hospital is nationally ranked – heart and heart surgery, geriatrics and neurology and neurosurgery – in the new metro rankings St. Francis was rated “high performing” in seven more specialties: cancer, ear-nose-throat, gastroenterology, gynecology, kidney disorders, pulmonology, and urology. The Hospital also scored high in patient safety.

The new metro area rankings will be updated in July at the same time the 2011-12 national Best Hospital rankings are posted online. For more information on the first-ever ratings, you can log on to http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/new-york-ny
