Paul Wright, M.D., Appointed Director of Stroke Center at St. Francis Hospital, the Heart Center

ROSLYN, N.Y. – Paul Wright, M.D., has been named director of St. Francis Hospital’s newly designated stroke center. Wright, who is currently a neurologist at the Neurological Associates of Long Island and an attending neurologist at North Shore University Hospital, will be responsible for overseeing the stroke program, providing quality care to neurological patients and organizing outreach programs for the community.

“My goal is to provide more expeditious treatment and prevention for individuals who suffer from stroke,” said Wright. “Educational programs will help patients and their family members recognize the warning signs of stroke.”

Dr. Wright, a native of Scotland, served in the Israeli army for three years before coming to the United States to attend Cornell University. He received his undergraduate degree in neurobiology and behavior in 1991 and moved back to Israel to obtain his doctor of medicine from Tel Aviv University in 1996. He completed his residency in 2000 and his fellowship program in 2001 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and then joined Neurological Associates a few months later. Mr. Wright also served as interim director of stroke and cerebral vascular disease at North Shore University Hospital from May 2005 to November 2006.

This designation of St. Francis’ stroke center puts emphasis on early aggressive treatment for neurological patients who show signs of having a stroke. Rather than having patients scattered throughout the hospital, they can be in a centralized location and receive care from highly skilled physicians and nurses.

“Hospitals with designated stroke centers have been able to show a decrease in morbidity, mortality and the length of stay for patients,” Wright explained. “Overall, having a stroke center with nurses and doctors who are well trained in recognizing and treating neurological disorders gives patients a chance to have an improved outcome.”

Dr. Wright resides in Nassau County on Long Island.
