St. Francis Hospital Achieves National Recognition for Nursing Care

One of only 200 hospitals in the U.S. awarded the prestigious MAGNET designation

ROSLYN, N.Y., September 5, 2006 – St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center has been named a recipient of the Magnet award for excellence in nursing services, one of the most coveted and prestigious honors a hospital and its nursing staff can achieve. The designation is the result of a rigorous evaluation that included extensive interviews and reviews of nursing services, clinical outcomes and patient care.

St. Francis is one of approximately 200 hospitals in the United States to have earned the Magnet designation. It is one of only two hospitals on Long Island and the only hospital in Nassau County to hold this distinction.

“The Magnet designation is a wonderful achievement,” said Alan D. Guerci, M.D., President and CEO of St. Francis Hospital. “It confirms what our patients and physicians have told us, that our nursing staff meets the highest standards in terms of dedication and professionalism, as well as in the concern they show for our patients every day.”

The Magnet designation is given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing philosophy and practice, adherence to national standards for improving patient care, and leadership and sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity.

“We are extremely proud to have earned the Magnet designation because it recognizes the quality, the teamwork and the compassion of our nurses,” said Ann Cella, R.N., M.Ed., CNAA, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “As the name implies, St. Francis has truly become a magnet for outstanding nurses who are looking to work in an environment that supports their professional practice. We are honored to have won this national recognition.”

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association and is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. St. Francis Hospital’s Magnet status, which includes annual reviews, is valid for four years.

St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center is New York State’s only specialty designated cardiac center and is the busiest heart center in the Northeast. A recognized leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiac disease, St. Francis is the only hospital in the metropolitan area with risk-adjusted mortality rates significantly below the statewide average for heart valve and valve/coronary artery bypass surgery, the most challenging forms of common cardiac surgery.[i]

St. Francis Hospital is a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHSLI).
