St. Francis Hospital Names Internationally Renowned Surgeon Gary R. Gecelter, M.D. as Director of Department of General Surgery

Roslyn, NY – St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Centerīƒĸ is pleased to announce the appointment of a leading, worldwide expert in minimally invasive surgery and surgical oncology, Gary R.Gecelter, M.D., as its new Director of General Surgery. Dr. Gecelter was formerly the V.P. Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the North Shore LIJ Health System before accepting the appointment at St. Francis. In his new role, Dr. Gecelter will oversee the Hospital’s growing noncardiac surgical program, which employs some of the most advanced technology and minimally-invasive techniques in esophageal, pancreatico-biliary, colon, urological, ear, nose and throat and orthopedic surgery.

Born in South Africa, where he received his medical education and post graduate training, Dr. Gecelter specializes in gastrointestinal surgical oncology. He has pioneered numerous laparoscopic techniques and is responsible for the development of flexible laparoscopy, which applies techniques used in gastroenterology to surgical oncologic laparoscopy. This has aided in allowing the minimally invasive resection of large abdominal tumors and even resection of esophageal cancers without having to make large chest and abdominal incisions.

“Dr. Gecelter brings with him vast expertise in minimally invasive surgery that will enhance our tradition of providing excellence in patient care,” said Jack Soterakis, M.D., V.P. of Medical Affairs. “We welcome him at a time when our new state-of-the-art surgical pavilion is about to go into full operation, offering patients new options in care.”

“I look forward to this exciting opportunity of providing patients with the latest techniques in general surgery, including minimally invasive robotic surgery,” said Dr. Gecelter. “We are entering a new phase in the Hospital’s history that will highlight our reputation not only as a leader in cardiac surgery, but other surgical specialties as well.”

Dr. Gecelter is a founding member of the Minimally Invasive Fellowship Council, and numerous national and international societies including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is also a member of the American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Gecelter has published extensively in his field and has lectured throughout the world, in countries such as Great Britain, South Africa, Chile, Argentina and Columbia. He is also a standing member of the American College of Surgeons Ultrasound Education Faculty.

Dr. Gecelter lives in Lake Success and has been married to his wife, Jaqi, for 22 years. They have three children, Ryan, Rachel, and Amy.
