Roslyn, New York – St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center has appointed Newell Robinson, M.D., as its new Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Robinson assumes the leadership of the most experienced cardiac surgical program in New York State and one of the top programs in the nation. With special expertise in minimally invasive heart surgery, Dr. Robinson has performed over 5,000 open heart procedures over the past 22 years.
“Dr. Robinson has achieved superior results, as reported by the New York State Adult Cardiac Surgery Database since its inception,” said Jack Soterakis, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs. “His expertise as a surgeon will greatly contribute to his new role at St. Francis and help continue our tradition of providing excellence in patient care.”
Dr. Robinson introduced new treatments for atrial fibrillation and minimally invasive cardiac surgery at St. Francis Hospital. He also helped his department begin protocols for using the daVinci Robot for cardiac and thoracic surgery.
“This is an exciting time for our department as we enter the next generation of patient care,” said Dr. Robinson. “My goal as Director is to provide patients with the latest technology to enhance their choices for treatment and obtain the best cardiac care.”
Dr. Robinson received his undergraduate degree from Davidson College in North Carolina and his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1977. He completed his postgraduate training at New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical School, which included training in general surgery, burn/trauma as well as surgical oncology. He was appointed Chief Resident in General Surgery in 1984. Dr. Robinson completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery in 1986, before advancing to Chief Resident. He also completed a fellowship in thoracic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering and a fellowship in trauma at the University of Washington in Seattle. He first joined St. Francis in 1986 as an Attending Surgeon.
Dr. Robinson has been recognized frequently for his contributions to cardiothoracic surgery, including being listed as one of the Best Doctors in New York Magazine, as well one of America’s Top Surgeons and NY Metro Top Doctors. He is board certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. Dr Robinson is a member of many professional societies and associations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, as well as being appointed a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has also co-authored, presented and published articles from which current techniques of minimally invasive heart surgery have evolved.
Dr. Robinson lives with his wife Victoria, and children Ruth, Sarah, Bryce and Hunter near Cold Spring Harbor.
