St. Francis Hospital Names Richard W. Johnson, M.D., Chief of Neurosurgery
Roslyn, NY- One of the region’s leading experts in spinal and neurosurgery, Richard W. Johnson, M.D., has been named Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®. Dr. Johnson has been on the staff in the division of Neurosurgery since 2005. He is the former Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and St. John’s Queens Hospital.
Dr. Johnson has a general neurosurgical practice and is fellowship trained in minimally invasive spinal procedures, as well as spinal instrumentation. He hopes to bring the latest techniques in disk replacement to the Hospital’s new state-of-the-art operating rooms.
“St. Francis has always been a destination hospital for heart surgery. We would like to make it a destination for spinal and neurosurgery,” says Dr. Johnson. His appointment is the latest in a number of top non-cardiac surgeons who have been recruited by the Hospital.
“We have been making major strides in expanding and strengthening our non-cardiac surgical services to meet growing demand for our top rated medical care,” says Jack Soterakis, M.D., VP of Medical Affairs.
Dr. Johnson was also the Director of Spinal Neurosurgery for Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn and is considered an expert in brain trauma. He received his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.
The doctor has published numerous articles on spinal and brain injuries. He is also a member of the area’s prominent medical societies and professional advisory boards and is an honorary neurosurgeon for the New York City Police Department.
Dr. Johnson is married with four children and lives in Port Washington.
