St. Francis Physician Leads Cardiac Mission to India to Help the Poorest of the Poor

Roslyn, NY- Vinni Jayam, M.D., a leading electrophysiologist at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®, recently brought his medical expertise to India for a lifesaving cardiac mission to help the poor. Dr. Jayam treated more than a dozen people, from ages 21 to 80, who did not have the financial resources to seek out much needed cardiac care.

This was Dr. Jayam’s second trip to India this year. His first was a mission last February to two hospitals in Tirupati, South India. At that time, he not only treated patients with the advanced techniques used by St. Francis Hospital’s world renowned Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Center, but he also helped to train Indian doctors on how to use them, setting the stage for his latest trip.

“We performed a multitude of procedures ranging from implanting pacemakers to using ablation in order to restore normal heart rhythms in underprivileged patients in desperate need of medical treatment,” said Dr. Jayam of his recent visit to Fr. Muller Hospital in Mangalore. With support from St. Francis Hospital and Medronics, a medical device manufacturer that donated $70,000 worth of equipment, Dr. Jayam was able to provide his services free of charge.

For Dr. Jayam, who comes from Kurnool, a small city in India, the ongoing missions of mercy are all about “giving back.”

“We as doctors come to the profession with idea of helping others and serving the needy,” says the well-respected physician. “Service is the best way of honoring our profession.”

One of several Indian media outlets that covered the doctor’s humanitarian trip echoed that sentiment and had Dr. Jayam in mind as they quoted a local saying: “We cannot do great things in life; we can do small things with great love.”
