(ROSLYN, NY) St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, a nationally recognized leader in cardiac care and a range of other specialties, celebrated the grand opening of the Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Pavilion at a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 10. The 158,000 square-foot, high-tech facility increases the Hospital’s available clinical space by 40 percent.

The DeMatteis Pavilion is the centerpiece of the Hospital’s three-year, $190 million Master Facilities Plan, which is designed to meet the projected demand for cardiac and non-cardiac services in the years to come. The pavilion features the only “High Def”operating rooms in the region.

“By combining the best of technology and design, this new pavilion offers a modern imaging and surgical center that will accommodate the high demand for care at St. Francis,” said Alan D. Guerci, M.D., President and CEO. “We are deeply grateful to those who contributed to the Hospital’s capital campaign and especially to Nancy DeMatteis and her late husband Fred who made this project a reality.”

Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre was on hand to bless the new three-story pavilion. Local elected officials including State Senator Kemp Hannon attended the ceremony. In addition, various St. Francis Hospital physicians and nurses were reunited with their patients to celebrate 80 years of care, including a South Korean patient who had been brought to the Hospital by former First Lady Nancy Reagan.

The 14 new “High Def” ORs feature touch-screen technology as part of a video integration system that allows surgeons instant access to laboratory data as well as high quality diagnostic images such as MRIs and coronary artery angiograms during a procedure. It also enables doctors to get a “second opinion,” if necessary, from a colleague in another location, whether it is around the corner or around the world.

The pavilion marks the largest expansion in the hospital’s history and will add 85 beds, bringing the total bed count to 364. It features a host of amenities designed to enhance patient comfort and care, including four private suites and 24 single rooms. The project took less than three years to complete. A significant portion of the funding came from a capital campaign that raised $55.2 million from generous donors including grateful patients, Board members and friends.
