The Department of Surgery at St. Francis Hospital offers a broad range of surgical services in both general and subspecialty disciplines. Our surgeons are among the area’s leading physicians and employ state-of-the-art expertise and technology to provide the highest quality surgical care available.
Renowned for years for its contribution to The Heart Center, our Department of Surgery is comprised of the divisions of Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, Vascular and General Surgery. Within the division of General Surgery, a broad complement of services is offered by board certified surgeons in areas including gastrointestinal, colorectal, breast, plastic, oncologic and minimally invasive surgery.
Currently under construction, the new surgical suite due to open in 2008 will feature substantially expanded patient care facilities highlighted by 14 all new operating rooms fully equipped with the most advanced video imaging and computer integration systems available. The expansion will enable St. Francis to advance the hospital’s mission to provide the highest level of medical care to the community.

The da Vinci Surgical System for Performing Prostate Surgery
A minimally invasive procedure that enhances surgical capabilities by enabling complex surgeries to be performed through small surgical incisions. The technique offers significant benefits over traditional prostate surgery, including less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and blood loss, and faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.
GreenLight PV Laser System for Treatment of Enlargement of the Prostate
This new system performs photoselective vaporization of the prostate using a special patented green-light laser, which provides a more effective wavelength to remove excess tissue. The first alternative to invasive surgical procedures and older laser technologies offered on Long Island, The GreenLight PV system offers quicker symptom relief, fewer side effects and long-lasting durability.
Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI)
A cutting-edge procedure to repair damaged cartilage to the knee using cartilage cells harvested arthroscopically from the patient. The procedure involves growing the cells, and then re-inserting them surgically as a patch. During the months that follow the cells continue to multiply, forming the building blocks of healthy cartilage and integrating with the surrounding cartilage. With time, the cells mature to form a cartilage repair.
BrainLAB ENT for Sinus Surgery
Using image-guided technology, the sinus surgeons at St. Francis Hospital combine CAT scans and computers to make sinus surgery safer and more efficient. The surgery is usually done as on outpatient procedure using an intranasal approach without any incisions.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Gall Bladder and Bowel Surgery
This minimally invasive technique lessens the physical and emotional impact of surgery on patients. It combines the use of small (usually less than ½”) openings with video-imaging, thus avoiding the need for a large incision to gain access to the abdomen.
